ABOUT THE PRESS

The University of Sankore Press takes its name from the historic University of Sankore, founded in the fourteenth century in Northern Africa in Timbuktu, Mali. An internationally recognized institution, The University of Sankore drew students, faculty and staff from other parts of Africa, Asia and Europe. It served as a center of scholarship and learning, offering the most advanced knowledge in such fields as philosophy, trigonometry, medicine, astronomy, algebra, history, literature and law.

A Continuing Commitment to African Scholarship

Our mission at the University of Sankore Press is to continue this legacy of commitment to African scholarship and learning by publishing scholarly yet accessible books on continental and diasporic African life, culture and history, with due attention to issues of race, ethnicity, gender and cultural diversity.

Serving the Academy and Community

Founded by a group of African American women, The University of Sankore Press serves the large and constantly growing Black Studies reading audience in both the academy and the community. Our publication, Introduction to Black Studies, by Dr. Maulana Karenga has become the definitive and most widely used introductory text in the discipline. Our authors include some of the foremost scholars in the field of Black Studies, such as Dr. Molefi Asante, the founding theorist of Afrocentricity and author of Cheikh Anta Diop: An Intellectual Portrait; and Dr. Maulana Karenga, the founding theorist of Kawaida Philosophy.

Celebrating and Practicing Culture

As a complement to our title Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture, written by Dr. Maulana Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa, we have taken the innovative step of adding Kwanzaa related items to our product line. Offering Kwanzaa symbols of the highest quality in conception and design is part of our commitment to provide cultural products of historical, current and enduring value which reaffirm the dignity of African peoples and the richness, creativity and instructive value of African culture.
